A Deloitte survey shows that consumers are increasingly embracing sustainable products. But this doesn’t mean we're there yet. More needs to be done to accommodate these environmentally conscious consumers. High prices and little information withholds many from really taking action, unfortunately. It’s time for a change!
Living more sustainably due to inflation
Previous studies by Deloitte showed that consumers mainly use sustainable and local products due to the presence of corona. So, it wasn’t really about people’s will to live more sustainably. In 2022 this changed. As everything becomes more expensive, people have no other choice than to be more innovative. In general people have adopted a more sustainable lifestyle by purchasing products that can be easily reused or repaired.
A significant increase in sustainable living
Fortunately, in the past year more and more consumers have started living more sustainably. Compared to the year 2021, people are eating a lot less meat, only buy what they really need and they even opt for means of transport with low Co2 emissions. Despite the fact that this is due to the ever-increasing prices, this is a great development from which we will all benefit in the long run.
For many people, a more sustainable life starts with recycling waste and wasting less food. The survey shows that no less than 75% of the respondents contributed to this last year. Also, 64% of adults have purchased less single-use plastic. A very positive development as far as we are concerned. It is therefore not without reason that Dick Moby's sunglasses are made from recycled materials and biodegradable acetate that is either reused or eventually literally disappears from the face of the earth.
Looking for sustainable brands like Dick Moby
Nowadays many people choose to ignore non-sustainable brands. People are simply more likely to wonder whether certain products are still ethically responsible. As a result, this group of people is proactively looking for sustainable brands. We are happy to say that many find Dick Moby when looking for sustainable glasses and sunglasses!
Sustainable choices for essential foodstuffs
The above shows that many adults live a much more sustainable life in 2022 than a year earlier. It should be added that these choices are mainly made with regard to essential foodstuffs, such as food and (non-alcoholic) drinks. This is also where choices will be made regarding meat consumption. Things have also changed in terms of fashion. Clothing is bought less often, with the choice also increasingly falling on second-hand clothing. For example, 40% of those surveyed in Deloitte's survey have purchased second-hand goods.
What does Dick Moby have to do with this?
We are particularly pleased with the results of the Deloitte survey. It means that people are more and more aware of the impact of plastic on the environment. In a previous study we have already told you about M49, the material with which our products are made.
We strive to encourage people to consider buying sunglasses in favor of a sustainable brand. A sustainable brand that ensures that its products are made from recycled material or naturally break down over time. For many people buying sunglasses isn’t something they do on a regular basis. So why not do it the right way while you’re getting one!
Informing our customer
As you have read before, the limited information available about sustainable products can be a reason for consumers not to buy certain products. Shame! This is why you will find a lot of information on our website about the materials we work with. We think it is important that our customers know what they are dealing with and how we make our products. The reason behind this? To create a bond with you, our customers. And to give you a sense of trust in us.
Dick Moby's price-quality ratio
Another reason why people can be hesitant about sustainable products is their price. Sustainable products are often quite expensive. Not with Dick Moby. Dick Moby's eyewear is often the most affordable eyewear at our retailers. Especially now that everything is getting more expensive, this is an amazing advantage! For example, Dick Moby glasses cost about €230, while competitors prices are set around €300. Have we convinced you enough to contribute to a better world with us?

They work on a daily basis to incorporate the principles of circular economy into their operations and their offerings. Moving away from the linear "take, make, dispose" concept, circular business models have a life cycle approach. Products are designed so that they can easily be re-used, remanufactured or recycled. Thereby minimising waste and ensuring resources remain in use for as long as possible.
Steel is considered to be the most recycled material on the planet, more than all other materials combined. Its metallurgical properties allow it to be recycled continually with no degradation in performance. Our parter has recycled stainless steel for more than 100 years and in our production today we use on average 82.1% (2019) recycled steel.

This way, we prevent the waste from the production proces from actually becoming waste! And we give the biodegradable acetate waste a second life.
]]>We don’t have to tell you that Dick Moby stands for sustainability. Nevertheless, we’re more than happy to explain to you how we do business in an environmentally conscious way. Therefore in this article we’ll take a closer look at biodegradable acetate. This is one of the materials with which we produce our sustainable glasses. Think of this as the smart, modern, environmentally friendly and sexy little brother of plastic. Not too bad, right?
M49 biodegradable acetate M49® has undergone biodegradability tests in compliance with rule ISO 14855, done by a paramount Research Institute in Belgium: Organic Waste System. M49® has been declared 100% biodegradable. |
A collaboration with Mazzucchelli 1849
Together with our Italian partner Mazzucchelli 1849 we ensure that our colored acetate frames are made from the most durable and sustainable materials available. That material is biodegradable acetate, or M49 as Mazzucchelli calls it. M49 is made from wood pulp, hardly causes pollution and biodegrades within 115 days when placed under optimal conditions. So don’t worry, it won't biodegrade on your nose.
Environmentally friendly and biodegradable plastic for sustainable eyewear
When you think of plastic, there is a good chance your thoughts are not that positive… and we feel the same way… Fortunately, with their biodegradable acetate M49, Mazzucchelli 1849 has developed a type of plastic that is actually quite environmentally friendly.
In their laboratories, they have been able to develop a formula that combines the physico-mechanical properties of the original, petrol based plastic formulation with a material that exudes nothing more than sustainability.
Cellulose, the backbone of the plant kingdom
It seems complicated, but we will try to explain clearly how this process exactly works. Normal acetate and plastic consists largely of phthalates derived from petroleum. M49, on the other hand, is a mixture of cellulose and a plant-based plasticizer.
The ingenuity of this mix of materials is the fact that traditional plasticizers have been replaced by plant-based plasticizers. These plant-based plasticizers come from citric acid esters. Because of this the physical properties and workability has greatly improved. Ultimately, this has led to one of the most important raw materials for the production of glass. A complicated story… But isn't it cool that you can rock Dick Moby glasses in an environmentally friendly way?!
Sustainable glasses in different styles and colors
This clever development has ensured that you can enjoy your sustainable Dick Moby glasses to the fullest. And did you know that our biodegradable acetate frames are available in many different colors and styles? Meaning you can be the eye-catcher at all your social events, after which it is up to you how to deal with all the attention.
Now please be careful with your brand new glasses and always check if the glasses aren’t exactly where you want to sit. That would be a bummer, right?

About Selfridges Material World Campaign
Selfridges kick starts 2017 by sharing a bright new look at sustainable innovation, through materiality, and the fascinating provenance of the fabrics of fashion. Their Material World campaign showcases eight forward-thinking brands committed to the cause of a sustainable fashion future, using a specific fabrics including leather, denim, linen and of course plastic. It goes without saying that Dick Moby represents the ‘sunny side of plastic’.
This is what Linda Hewson, Selfridges creative director, had to say about their Material World campaign: “We are a shop selling “stuff”, so let’s take a closer look at the very materiality that makes it. ‘Material World’ will examine sustainable textile development, with a focus on social, local and global production stories. The project will explore current problems and their impact as well as presenting solutions and ideas, with honesty and humour, in a retail environment. Through ‘Material World’ we want to invite consumers and the industry to refashion the way we think about our clothes, and how we talk about sustainability.”

About Tenue de Nîmes
Founders of Amsterdam based Tenue de Nîmes Menno and René have shared a strong passion for ‘pure blue’ for well over a decade. On 21 November 2008 their vision on modern and traditional denim was realized and made tangible with the opening of their first store. Founded on the basic principles of quality, function and simplicity that are rooted in the history of jeans, their stores have since then evolved into places where they sell what they like to describe as ‘The Good Things in Life’.
Both pairs of shades are available in store and on our website.

For this year’s lookbook we went to the capital of sunny Portugal to shoot our 2016 Spring-Summer collection ‘Dazed & Confused’. With renowned london based photographers Gus & Stella and models Jaleesa and Gabriel we explored the colourful streets of Lisbon and ate a lot of Pasteis de Nata.
The sound of fado music and delicious weather created the perfect working environment and after not too long we managed to get the shots we were looking for. As we were going for ‘serious, but not too serious’, we ended up in the ocean and made a perfect last day.
If you ever go to Lisbon, give us a shout and we’ll give you some good tips for where to go!
